In the run up to the Christmas Bazaar there will be a series of Q&A with some of the exhibitors. The series will start with the three organisers Sarah Malone, Sophie Nixon and first up Jeweller Jo Lavelle.
What is your practice? Materials? Processes?
I make jewellery. I mainly work in silver and sometimes gold. I have recently learnt how to cut stones so have started to incorporate them into my work mainly in one off pieces. My processes are very much traditional jewellery making techniques with hand tools but one piece of equipment with a plug a could not be without is a barrel polisher.
What 5 words describe your work?
Silver, fun, moveable, fiddly and playful.
Do you have any design heroes?
I have many!! Lucienne Day, Robin Day, Jacqueline Ryan, Zaha Hadid, Katy Hackney, Kathy Murphy, Cathy Chotard, Syann Van Niftrik and Karl Fritsch.
Where is your studio? Pictures?
I work from home these days mainly to be round my kids. I am lucky to have a big dry cellar space with windows and tend be in my workshop between 9 10 and 3 05 trying to cram 8 hours of work into 6 hours and always listening to radio 6.
Describe in 10 words a typical day in your studio.
Orders, hammering, soldering, tea, biscuits, radio 6, silver, filing, polishing, jewellery.
Are you working on anything unusual at the moment?
At the moment it is all about retail shows such as the Christmas Bazaar and of course Christmas so I am very busy making stock. In the last few months the most unusual piece I have worked on was a customer commission for two rings based on triangles. The customers had a very strong sense of design and knew exactly what they wanted and were a dream to work with. If you come to the Christmas Bazaar I will tell you the most unusual piece I have ever made!!
What are you selling at the Christmas Bazaar? Anything new?
I will be selling my usual jewels alongside lots of one off pieces. Lots of pompom jewellery and some nice hand cut stone necklaces. I will also have wish lists for you christmas shoppers to hand to those special present buyers!!
Tell us something we don’t know
I made a ‘Bet’ gold ankle chain for Bet Lynch to wear in Coronation Street.
