What is your practice? materials? processes?
I design and make bags and accessories. I work mainly in cow hide leather but some of my work does incorporate other natural materials such as cotton and waxed cottons. Using my industrial sewing machine I construct each piece and hand finish the individual items often adding traditional handstitching to highlight and strengthen certain parts. I love simple shapes and “none fussy”, quite plain but functional.
What 5 words best describe your work?
Handmade, colourful, functional, soft, light.
Do you have any design heroes?
In the textiles world I have always admired the work of Lucienne Day for her bold use of colour and lovely mark making but I love looking for colour and pattern in all forms. I have lots of inspirational images to look at online too now with the help of Pinterest, Even late at night when everyone’s in bed!
Where is your studio? Pictures?
My workspace time is split more now I have a family. I mainly do my machine work at home in my studio (when that gets to small it tends to spread to the rest of the house). I am also part of a studio/retail space at Studio 9 at the Craft and Design centre in Manchester so all my ‘finishing off’ work and cutting out gets done whilst I’m there. It is also a chance to engage with customers and get valued feedback for my work which is always good.
Describe in 10 words a typical day in your studio
Radio on, iron, cut, machine, concentration, thinking, developing, creating…….talking (to myself)!
Are you working on anything unusual at the moment?
I’m always trying to think or develop new things from what I am currently working on or whatever pops into my head whilst I am working so you never know what tomorrow may bring!. I have been busy working on ‘Christmas’ at the moment which is why I look forward to a quieter time in the new year where I can develop the new ideas buzzing round in my head at the moment.
What are you selling at the Christmas Bazaar? Anything new?
I will be bringing along all my accessories such as my various purses, keyrings, wallets and a selection of bags. I have some new additions to my work such as squeeze coin purses and mini-mini keyring purses which can double up into a tree decoration! I am looking forward to customers looking through my work on the day.
