Q&A Reportage Illustrator Liz’s Scribbles

lizsscribbles2

What is your practice? Materials? Processes?

I am a reportage illustrator and urban sketcher, recording the world around me in drawings, in real time, on location. I use fountain pen and ink for my line work to which I add colour, usually watercolour. I usually add colour selectively. Another of my approaches is to put colour on the paper first and work the lines over the top but there are several other approaches too!

What 5 words best describe your work?

urban, reportage, illustration, Storytelling, sense of place

Do you have any design heroes?

Yes! The landscape designer Dan Pearson for his incredible ability to convey a sense of place and of nature in his designs and George Butler, the War Reportage illustrator who has covered both the Iraq war and now the refugee crisis. His drawings are incredibly powerful and convey the plight of the people in those situations.

Where is your studio?

The streets and places where I draw! (i.e. I am out on location a lot!); for the finishing touches, including colour and lettering, I work from my cellar studio at home in Salford.

Describe in 10 words a typical day in your studio

Respond to mail, Stock bag, draw on site; test colour and lettering
